Honestly, it felt like the administration hindered me more than encouraged me, for whatever reason, and almost prevented me from challeging myself. Both high schools (North and South) offer a lot of AP options (compared to the average American high school), but the thing is, I ran into a lot of resistance whenever I tried to take "too many" honors or AP classes. It splits a little more in 9th grade before honors courses become a thing in 10th grade. Like ligirl said, math splits in 7th grade into two groups - but still no real divide. So everyone's in the same boat for most of elementary and middle school. We didn't do class ranks, and that's probably part of the reason. Everyone thinks their kid is a special snowflake and extremely gifted, so we can't hurt anyone's feelings by acting like someone else is better - even if it's completely based off merit. There's this attitude that everyone is equal. Grew up in Newton (graduated from North a few years ago).
